Matthieu Saglio Quartet / Marco Mezquida Trio

On his new album «Letter to Milos», Marco Mezquida reunites his trio, with whom he already recorded the two albums «Ravel's Dreams» (2017) and «Talismán» (2019). Together with Aleix Tobias on drums and percussion and Martín Meléndez on cello, they create a playful and colourful sound that runs through all the compositions. The three return to familiar realms of traditional Iberian music, revelling in their fondness for the idea of syncretism (in this case the combination of Son Cubano and Brazilian samba) or devoting themselves to their usual excursions into romanticism, but with borrowings from free jazz, blues, circus music and a whole lot of groove.

«In Matthieu Saglio's music there is plenty of room for the cultures of the world and with Voices he embraces them all.» – WDR 3 (DE). The voice is something very characteristic, even intimate of each of us - and above all something close to our skin. When Matthieu Saglio talks about the human voice, the 46-year-old goes into raptures - and so it made sense for him to dedicate his new album to this sounding reflection of our soul: «Voices». The French-born musician is actually a cellist. Since the age of eight, he has dedicated himself entirely to playing the four strings and, following his classical string studies at the Rennes Conservatory, has built bridges to jazz and flamenco, folk music and African sounds and rhythms on his instrument, incorporating Visigothic and Arabic influences into his playing - no wonder, as the creative spirit has lived in Valencia for more than two decades, a melting pot of different cultures for thousands of years.
