Erinnern & Vergessen

The music and knowledge of the Persian Safavid dynasty, forgotten for centuries and rediscovered by oud player Yasamin Shahhosseini, is brought to new life in «Dârvag». Inspired by the poem of the same name by the Iranian poet Nima Yooshij, in which the poet longs for «Dârvag» – a species of frog known in the northern Iranian dialect and whose song announces rain – Karen Keyhani composed a work full of memories, longing and hope.

As the son of an Iranian immigrant to the United States, Daniel Reza Sabzghabaei repeatedly wonders what his deceased father held on to and let go of along the way. What sounds and memories have remained with him? What memories comforted him? Sabzghabaei's new work is about cultural memory and the «debris of memory» that immigrants and their children accumulate across oceans and centuries of dispersion.

Lawrence Dunn, on the other hand, uses musical and psychological devices to manipulate our memory and perception of time. Based on a Welsh folk song, déjà vu and acoustic illusions arise that alter and recreate memories.
