The string trio genre long remained an outsider among chamber music formations. Although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert composed important works for this instrumentation, the string trio always remained in the slipstream of its big brother, the string quartet. In the 20th century, a whole series of key works for this instrumentation were composed by Anton Webern, Max Reger, Arnold Schönberg and Paul Hindemith, including the String Trio from 1954 by the Swiss-Hungarian composer Sándor Veress. Around this extraordinary work, the Mondrian Ensemble will present a programme that includes Sofia Gubaidulina and two composers of the younger generation: Daniela Terranova and Judit Varga.
