Erinnern und Vergessen

Forgotten and rediscovered – The music of the Persian Safavid dynasty was forgotten for centuries and has only been re-explored in the last decade. In «Dârvag», oud virtuoso Yasamin Shahhosseini brings this rediscovered knowledge back to life.
Loss and longing – in the northern Iranian dialect, «Dârvag» refers to a type of frog that begins to sing just before it rains. In the poem of the same name, which inspired Karen Keyhani's composition, the Iranian poet Nima Yooshij calls longingly for Dârvag, the herald of freedom and life.
Memory debris – As the son of an Iranian immigrant to the USA, Daniel Reza Sabzghabaei keeps asking himself what his deceased father held on to and let go of along the way. What sounds and memories have remained with him? What reminiscences comforted him? Sabzghabaei's new work is about cultural memory and the debris that immigrants and their children accumulate across oceans and centuries of dispersion.
Manipulation – In his new play, Lawrence Dunn also seems to deal with the topos of «losing and longing» through a Welsh folk song. But beware! He uses musical-psychological tricks to manipulate our memory and perception of time. Among other things, this results in constructed déjà-vus and other acoustic-mnemonic deceptive manoeuvres.
