The Mondrian Ensemble's programme «Quellmund» demonstrates how differently the versatile sound spectrum of the oboe can sound in combination with the sound of the string instruments. The most famous work for this instrumentation, the oboe quartet KV 370 by W.A. Mozart from 1781, is a classic of the genre. Mozart was inspired by the expansion of the oboe's sound range, which he emphasised in a virtuoso oboe part. Mozart's oboe quartet will be juxtaposed with 21st century oboe quartets that explore the possibilities of the instrument in equal measure: the «Oboe Quartet» by British composer Harrison Birtwistle and «Quellmund» for oboe and string trio by Swiss composer Michel Roth. These works with oboe are joined by the string trio «Surfacing» by composer Joanna Wozny.
