Barry John Guy is a British double bass player and composer. As a bassist, he uses various unconventional techniques, some of which he developed himself. He is regarded as one of the most important musical personalities of the English music avant-garde.
In the years between the early 1970s and the mid-1990s, Barry Guy held the position of principal bass in various orchestras, including the Orchestra of St John's Smith Square, City of London Sinfonia, Monteverdi Orchestra, The Academy of Ancient Music, Kent Opera and The London Classical Players. He has also been active in the European improvisation scene.
He is the founder and artistic director of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, for which he has written several works.
Guy's compositions are usually the result of a personal collaboration with musicians and ensembles for whom he writes. The commissions come from chamber orchestras, chamber music groups and soloists who are interested in contemporary music performance and have a particular interest in communicating with the audience.
The scores are demanding and often offer innovative sound colours and extended instrumental techniques. As a performer, he is in an ideal position to assess these possibilities.

A discussion with the artist, moderated by saxophonist Marcus Weiss, will round off the evening.
